Vertical ventilation passage
An airshaft is a vertical passage built into a structure to allow ventilation, bringing fresh air into interior spaces that lack windows or outside walls.
Common in older apartment buildings, mines, and underground facilities: The bathroom window opened onto a narrow airshaft.
Also spelled as two words: air shaft.
