containment vessel
Protective housing structure
A containment vessel is a sealed structure designed to prevent the release of hazardous materials—most often the outer shell surrounding a nuclear reactor core.
In the event of an accident, the containment vessel serves as the last barrier between radioactive material and the environment: The containment vessel remained intact despite the meltdown.
The term extends to any robust enclosure meant to isolate dangerous substances.
