agua fresca

Fruity Latin refreshment

Agua fresca is a Mexican beverage made by blending fruit, flowers, or seeds with water and sugar.

Common varieties include watermelon, hibiscus (jamaica), tamarind, and horchata (made from rice).

The drinks are light and refreshing, less sweet than American fruit punches: I'll have a large horchata agua fresca.

Literally "fresh water" in Spanish.
