earthstar
Star-shaped mushroom
Earthstar is a type of fungus related to puffballs.
When mature, its outer layer splits into star-shaped segments that peel back and curve outward, revealing a central spore sac.
The opened form resembles a star lying on the ground: We found several earthstars scattered across the forest floor.
