adenoid

Nasal passage obstruction

Adenoids are a mass of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the nasal passage, above the roof of the mouth.

Like tonsils, they help fight infection in young children but often shrink by adulthood.

When adenoids become swollen or infected, they can obstruct breathing and cause a distinctive nasal voice quality.

As an adjective, adenoidal describes this blocked-nose sound: His adenoidal whine grated on everyone's nerves.
