failure to thrive
Child development faltering
Failure to thrive is a medical term for inadequate growth in infants and young children—weight gain and physical development that fall significantly below expected standards.
The phrase extends to adults, particularly elderly patients, who show unexplained decline in health, appetite, and vitality.
Figuratively, anything that should be flourishing but isn't may be described this way: The startup showed early promise but soon began a failure to thrive.
