abuelita

Affectionate abuela diminutive

Abuelita is Spanish for grandmother, used as an affectionate term especially in Mexican and Mexican-American families.

The diminutive suffix (-ita) adds warmth, making it closer to "grandma" or "granny" than formal "grandmother." English speakers in the American Southwest and in Latino communities use it freely: Abuelita's tamales are the best.

The word also names a popular Mexican chocolate tablet used for hot cocoa.
