Fujian is a coastal province in southeastern China, across the Taiwan Strait from Taiwan.
The region is known for its mountainous terrain, distinctive Min dialects (including Hokkien), and historical significance as a center of maritime trade and emigration.
Many overseas Chinese communities trace their ancestry to Fujian: My grandmother's family came from Fujian.
