WiMAX

Metropolitan wireless standard

WiMAX is a wireless broadband technology standard designed for high-speed data transmission over long distances.

The name stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.

Developed in the early 2000s as a competitor to cellular networks and WiFi, WiMAX promised citywide coverage but was largely overtaken by 4G LTE technology: The city deployed WiMAX to provide internet access to rural areas.
