Gesamtkunstwerk
Total artistic synthesis
Gesamtkunstwerk is a German term for a total work of art—a creative project that synthesizes multiple artistic disciplines into an integrated whole.
Wagner championed the concept for opera, merging music, poetry, drama, and stagecraft into unified expression.
The term extends to any ambitious work aspiring to that synthesis: Her album was a gesamtkunstwerk of sound, visuals, and narrative. (Lowercase gesamtkunstwerk is the anglicized form.)
