Master and Commander
Ship's supreme officer
Master and Commander is a naval rank and title, historically used in the British Royal Navy for an officer commanding a smaller warship—typically a sloop or corvette—who held a rank between lieutenant and full captain.
The term gained modern currency through Patrick O'Brian's historical novels featuring Captain Jack Aubrey, and the 2003 film adaptation: We watched Master and Commander last night.
The title emphasizes dual authority: master of the vessel's navigation and commander of its crew.
