Traditional Chinese
Complex script variant
Traditional Chinese refers to the older, more complex form of written Chinese characters, preserved in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas Chinese communities.
These characters retain their historical complexity, as opposed to the simplified forms adopted by mainland China in the 1950s.
The term also describes the script system itself: The document was written in Traditional Chinese.
In software and publishing, it distinguishes character sets and fonts.
