oracle bone script

Ancient Chinese inscriptions

Oracle bone script is the earliest known form of Chinese writing, dating from around 1200 BCE during the Shang dynasty.

The characters were carved into turtle shells and animal bones, primarily ox scapulae, which were then heated until they cracked; diviners interpreted these cracks to answer questions about harvests, warfare, and royal affairs.

Many modern Chinese characters evolved directly from these ancient pictographic and ideographic forms.
