Telstar

Orbital broadcast pioneer

Telstar was a communications satellite launched in 1962, the first to relay television signals across the Atlantic Ocean.

The name became synonymous with space-age technology and inspired an instrumental rock hit by The Tornados.

In sports, Telstar is a classic black-and-white paneled soccer ball design, first used in the 1970 World Cup and named for its resemblance to the satellite.
