surf rock

Reverb-drenched guitar genre

Surf rock is a genre of rock music that emerged in early 1960s Southern California, characterized by reverb-drenched electric guitar, driving rhythms, and themes evoking ocean waves, beaches, and California car culture.

The instrumental style pioneered by Dick Dale used rapid tremolo picking to simulate the feeling of riding a wave.

Vocal surf rock, exemplified by the Beach Boys, added layered harmonies about surfing, girls, and summer: We spent the drive listening to old surf rock.
