Tasmanian wolf

Extinct pouched predator

The Tasmanian wolf, also called the thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial native to Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.

Despite its name and dog-like appearance, it was not related to wolves—the resemblance is an example of convergent evolution.

The last known specimen died in a Tasmanian zoo in 1936; the species is presumed extinct, though unconfirmed sightings persist.
