extirpated
Rooted out entirely
Extirpated means completely destroyed or rooted out.
A species extirpated from a region has been eliminated there, though it may survive elsewhere—distinct from extinct, which means gone entirely.
The word applies to anything eradicated: The regime extirpated all political opposition.
Extirpate suggests thorough removal, as if pulling something out by the roots.
