Shockley

Silicon Valley patriarch

Shockley is a surname, most notably associated with William Shockley (1910–1989), the American physicist who co-invented the transistor and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956.

His later career was marred by his advocacy of eugenics and racist theories about intelligence, which overshadowed his scientific achievements.

The name sometimes appears in technical contexts: Shockley diode, Shockley equation.
