Salvelinus

Cold-water salmonid genus

Salvelinus is a genus of freshwater fish in the salmon family, commonly known as chars or charrs.

The genus includes species prized by anglers, such as brook trout, lake trout, Arctic char, and Dolly Varden.

These cold-water fish typically inhabit northern lakes and streams across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Unlike true trout, chars have light spots on a darker body and require very cold, clean water to thrive.
