hedge apple
Bumpy green sphere
Hedge apple is a regional name for the bumpy, yellowish-green fruit of the Osage orange tree, common across the American Midwest and South.
The fruits are roughly softball-sized and inedible, though folklore holds they repel insects and spiders—a claim with little scientific support.
The name comes from the tree's historical use in hedgerows before barbed wire.
Also called horse apple or Osage orange.
