wildcatters

Risky drill seekers

Wildcatters are people who drill for oil or gas in areas not known to be productive—speculative ventures with high risk and potentially high reward.

The term comes from early American oil exploration, when drilling in unproven territory was considered as unpredictable as a wild cat.

By extension, wildcatter can describe any bold speculator or entrepreneur operating outside established channels: The tech wildcatters were betting everything on an untested idea.
