Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus was the sixteenth-century Polish astronomer who proposed that the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun, overturning the ancient belief that Earth stood at the center of the universe.

His heliocentric model, published in 1543, fundamentally changed astronomy and is often called the Copernican Revolution.

The adjective Copernican now describes any paradigm-shifting change: a Copernican shift in economic thinking.
