Mormons
Salt Lake faithful
Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a Christian denomination founded by Joseph Smith in New York in 1830.
The name derives from the Book of Mormon, a sacred text Smith claimed to have translated from golden plates revealed to him by an angel.
Mormons are known for their missionary work, emphasis on family, abstinence from alcohol and caffeine, and historical practice of polygamy, which the mainstream church abandoned in 1890.
The term is sometimes considered informal; members often prefer to be called Latter-day Saints.
