Shakers

Trembling worship community

Shakers are members of a Christian sect founded in 18th-century England, formally known as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing.

The name comes from their ecstatic trembling during worship.

Shakers lived in celibate communities, made famously simple furniture, and declined to near-extinction by the 20th century: Shaker furniture fetches high prices at auction. (Lowercase shakers are containers for dispensing salt or pepper.)
