Academy student rank
A midshipman is a naval officer in training, ranking below the commissioned officers.
In the U.S.
Navy, midshipmen are students at the Naval Academy; in the Royal Navy, the rank historically designated young men learning seamanship aboard ship.
The name derives from the middle section of the ship where such trainees were traditionally stationed.
