swimbladder
Internal fish balloon
A swimbladder is an internal gas-filled organ that allows bony fish to control their buoyancy without expending energy swimming.
By adjusting the amount of gas in the bladder, a fish can rise, sink, or hover at a particular depth.
Also spelled as two words, swim bladder.
Some fish species lack this organ entirely and must swim continuously to avoid sinking.
