Sierra Madre

Mexico's mother range

Sierra Madre is Spanish for "mother mountain range," applied to several major mountain systems in the Americas.

The Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental frame Mexico's central plateau.

The Sierra Madre in California and Guatemala bear the same name.

In American culture, *The Treasure of the Sierra Madre* (1948) made the phrase evocative of gold prospecting and moral corruption.
