Malaya

Pre-federation British territory

Malaya is the historical name for the Malay Peninsula, particularly the British-controlled territories that gained independence in 1957 and later joined with other states to form Malaysia in 1963.

The term appears frequently in historical contexts, especially regarding World War II's Pacific theater and the postwar decolonization period.

The Japanese invasion of Malaya began in December 1941.

In contemporary usage, Malaysia has largely replaced Malaya except in historical references.
