MRE
Soldier's packaged meal
MRE stands for Meal, Ready-to-Eat—a self-contained military field ration designed to be eaten without cooking or refrigeration.
Each package includes an entrée, sides, dessert, and a flameless heater activated by water.
MREs are designed for durability over palatability, though varieties range from tolerable to dreaded: Nobody wants the vegetable omelet MRE.
Survivalists and hikers also stock them.
