self-heating

Warms without power

Self-heating describes something that generates its own heat, typically through a chemical reaction.

Self-heating technology appears in portable food containers, hand warmers, and beverage cans: a self-heating coffee can, self-heating meal packs for camping.

The term also describes materials that warm spontaneously under certain conditions, sometimes dangerously: self-heating in coal piles can lead to fires.
