Métro

French urban railway

Métro is the underground railway system in Paris, or by extension, similar systems in other French-speaking cities.

The word is a clipping of *chemin de fer métropolitain* (metropolitan railway).

In English contexts, the accent often drops: We took the metro to the Louvre.

Many cities now use metro generically for their rapid transit systems.
