Jacobins
Terror's political architects
The Jacobins were members of a radical political club during the French Revolution, known for their role in the Reign of Terror and their advocacy of revolutionary purity.
The name came from their meeting place in a former Dominican (Jacobin) convent.
Today, jacobin describes anyone holding extreme revolutionary or egalitarian views, often with implications of ideological ruthlessness: The party's jacobin wing demanded purges of moderates.
