Live Aid

Dual-continent charity shows

Live Aid was a pair of massive benefit rock concerts held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, organized to raise money for Ethiopian famine relief.

The event was conceived by Bob Geldof and featured performances by Queen, U2, David Bowie, and dozens of other major acts.

The name echoes Band Aid, the charity supergroup whose "Do They Know It's Christmas?" preceded it.

Live Aid became a template for celebrity-driven humanitarian events and remains a cultural touchstone for 1980s idealism: the Live Aid generation.
