Soft butch describes a lesbian or queer woman whose gender presentation is masculine-leaning but not aggressively so—perhaps short hair and button-downs, but with softer edges than a stone butch.
The term positions someone on the spectrum between femme and butch, closer to butch but retaining some traditionally feminine qualities: She's more soft butch—flannel shirts but also earrings.
