Hijra
Mecca to Medina
The Hijra is the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, a foundational event in Islamic history marking the beginning of the Muslim community as a political entity.
The Islamic calendar dates from this event, with years designated AH (Anno Hegirae).
Also spelled Hegira or Hejira.
The Hijra established Medina as the center of early Islam. (Lowercase hijra refers to a third-gender identity in South Asia.)
