Islamists

Political faith advocates

Islamists are advocates of political Islam—the view that Islamic principles should govern public life, law, and the state, not just private religious practice.

The term covers a wide spectrum, from those who seek change through democratic participation to militant groups pursuing violent revolution.

In Western media, Islamist often carries negative connotations and is sometimes confused with Islamic (relating to Islam generally) or Muslim (a follower of Islam), though the terms are not interchangeable.

Islamists won a majority in the parliamentary elections.
