Hong Kong protests
Democracy demonstrations, 2019
The Hong Kong protests refer to a series of mass demonstrations, most notably the 2019-2020 movement against a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed transfers to mainland China.
Protesters feared erosion of Hong Kong's semi-autonomous status under "one country, two systems." The movement expanded to broader demands for democratic reforms before being suppressed through national security legislation and mass arrests.
The Hong Kong protests drew millions into the streets.
