national security law
Governmental defense legislation
National security law refers to legislation empowering governments to protect against threats to the state—espionage, terrorism, sedition, foreign interference.
The term gained particular prominence with Hong Kong's 2020 National Security Law, imposed by Beijing, which criminalized secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces.
Critics argue such laws often suppress legitimate dissent under cover of protecting the nation: The national security law effectively ended press freedom in Hong Kong.
