The Birth of Venus

Goddess from seafoam

The Birth of Venus is a painting by Sandro Botticelli, completed around 1485, depicting the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a fully grown woman, standing on a giant scallop shell.

The image—Venus with flowing hair, blown toward shore by winds—has become iconic in Western art, referenced and parodied endlessly: She posed like the Birth of Venus at the beach.
