Gattaca

Designer baby nightmare

Gattaca is the title of a 1997 science fiction film depicting a future society stratified by genetic engineering, where DNA determines social destiny.

The word has become shorthand for dystopian genetic discrimination or the ethical perils of selecting for "desirable" traits: Designer babies? That's Gattaca territory.

The title derives from the letters G, A, T, and C—the four nucleotide bases of DNA.
