Fascism

Italian authoritarian movement

Fascism is a political ideology characterized by authoritarian nationalism, centralized autocratic rule, and forcible suppression of opposition.

It emerged in early 20th-century Europe, most notably in Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany.

Fascism typically exalts nation and race above the individual, demands loyalty to a strong leader, and rejects liberal democracy.

In casual use, fascism and fascist are often hurled as insults at anyone perceived as authoritarian or intolerant: My boss is such a fascist about the dress code. (Lowercase fascism refers to the ideology generally; capitalized Fascism sometimes denotes the specific Italian movement.)
