Authoritarian nationalist government
A fascist state is a nation governed by an authoritarian regime that exalts national identity, suppresses opposition, and concentrates power in a dictatorial leader.
The term derives from Mussolini's Italy but applies to any government combining ultranationalism, militarism, and totalitarian control: Nazi Germany was the most destructive fascist state in history.
Used loosely, it criticizes governments perceived as oppressive or antidemocratic: Critics called the new security laws a step toward a fascist state.
