Culicoides
Tiny biting flies
Culicoides is a genus of tiny biting midges—flies so small they pass through ordinary window screens.
These insects are medically and agriculturally significant as vectors of diseases affecting livestock and humans, including bluetongue virus in sheep and cattle.
Their bites cause intense itching.
Various species are called no-see-ums, sand flies, or punkies.
