crane flies
Harmless leggy insects
Crane flies are large, delicate insects with extremely long legs and slender bodies, resembling oversized mosquitoes.
Despite their appearance, they don't bite—adults barely feed at all.
They're also called daddy longlegs in British English, though Americans use that term for harvestmen (arachnids) and cellar spiders.
Crane flies kept bumping against the porch light.
