Tiny biting fly
A punkie is a tiny biting fly, also called a no-see-um or biting midge.
These insects are small enough to pass through ordinary window screens and deliver bites disproportionate to their size.
The word comes from a Lenape term and is used mainly in the northeastern United States: The punkies are brutal tonight.
