Chincoteague

Virginia barrier island

Chincoteague is an island and town on Virginia's Eastern Shore, famous for its wild ponies.

The Chincoteague ponies—small, sturdy horses living on nearby Assateague Island—are rounded up annually and swum across the channel in a tradition immortalized by the children's novel *Misty of Chincoteague*.

The name comes from an Algonquian word.
