highland clans
Elevated tribal families
Highland clans are the traditional kinship groups of the Scottish Highlands, extended families bound by shared ancestry, territory, and loyalty to a chief.
The term evokes a romanticized image of tartan-clad warriors, clan tartans, and feudal allegiances that persisted into the eighteenth century: The highland clans rallied to the Stuart cause in 1745. (Capitalized Highland Clans may appear in formal historical contexts.)
