Protectorate
England's republican experiment
A protectorate is a territory that governs itself internally but depends on a stronger nation for defense and foreign affairs.
The arrangement typically results from treaty rather than conquest, distinguishing it from outright colonization: The British established protectorates across Africa and the Pacific.
By extension, any relationship where one party shields another from external threats: The smaller company operated as a protectorate of the industry giant.
