James I
Elizabeth's Scottish successor
James I was king of England and Ireland from 1603 to 1625, having already ruled Scotland as James VI since 1567.
He united the English and Scottish crowns, commissioned the King James Bible, and his reign saw the Gunpowder Plot and early colonization of North America.
The term Jacobean (from the Latin for James) describes his era's architecture, literature, and culture.
