Channukkah

Eight-night Jewish celebration

Channukkah is a spelling variant of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of lights commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

The holiday falls in late November or December and is marked by lighting candles on a menorah, eating fried foods, and exchanging gifts.

The many transliterations from Hebrew—Chanukah, Hannukah, Chanukkah—reflect the absence of exact English equivalents for certain Hebrew sounds.
